Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

Most of us go into hypnosis during a normal day. It’s not strange or mysterious: we’re just concentrating on a single idea to the exclusion of all others. That’s all hypnosis is really – concentration.

The advantage of being in this state of mind during therapy is that we can by-pass the conscious mind – the bit of us we use to make conscious decisions – and talk directly to the sub-conscious mind – the bit of us that contains our natural instincts, intuition and memories. They’re both vital for our well being, but it’s the subconscious that, during hypnotherapy, allows us to overcome the restraints of the conscious and helps us make beneficial changes in our lives.

Hypnosis is a very simple process: most of us attain it quite easily, and during it we are in complete control of our mind and body. We cannot be made to say or do anything we wouldn’t want to in a waking state, so forget any notion that you might end up prancing around naked and clucking like a demented chicken: it just can’t happen – not in real life anyway.

To over-simplify things only slightly, there are two types of hypnotherapy in common use: suggestion therapy and hypnoanalysis. The first is where we deal with relatively straightforward, though serious issues such as smoking, weight, phobias, nail biting etc. by prescribing simple post-hypnotic coping strategies; the second is where we treat more complex issues, usually connected with past, unresolved and even forgotten matters which nevertheless continue to hang around our subconscious, preventing us from leading contented lives. To do this, we often regress the client, under hypnosis, to the ‘initial sensitising event’ which triggered their particular condition, recognise it, expose it, and neutralise it.

Even difficult problems such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) are recognised by the medical profession as responding successfully to hypnotherapy, and there are thousands of well-documented cases of many other conditions such as psoriasis, stammering, panic attacks, even sexual dysfunction responding positively to hypnotherapy.

So if something’s preventing you from enjoying a fully functioning, happy and contented life, just remember: it’s not normal, you don’t have to put up with it and you can change it.
